Compiled over a period of more than forty years, Elliott Carter's Harmony Book is a massive encyclopedia devoted to exploring harmonic relationships in the twelve-note chromatic sacle. Mr. Carter has acknowledged that the Harmony Book was planned and developed to serve only as a tool for his compositional work, rather than as a resource for public usage. It was a project for self-reference, and in many ways its development can be traced to developments in his music.
